     ANNUAL RECOGNITION LUNCHEON

 

Volunteers Recognized for 260,000 Hours of Service

             During its Annual Recognition Luncheon, Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay, Inc. saluted volunteers of its Foster Grandparent, Senior Companion, Bill Payer, and Spic & Span programs on their significant anniversaries.  The luncheon was held on December 16 at the Embassy Suites Tampa USF/Busch Gardens.  Tony Morejon, Hispanic Liaison for Hillsborough County, served as Master of Ceremonies.

            Among the honorees was Mildred Brisker, who was recognized for 27 years of service.  Mildred is a Foster Grandparent at the after-school program at Lowry Elementary School, where students, parents and teachers all call her “Grandma.”  She is considered a “vitally important and very popular” member of the staff. 

Celebrating 23 years of service was Estella Vinson, who serves as a Foster Grandparent at LaVoy Exceptional Center.  For her, it is rewarding to serve the school’s special population.  She is a real asset to the staff.  She loves the children and the encouragement she can give them. 

Addie Lambert has served for 20 years as a Foster Grandparent.  She serves at the Sulphur Springs Head Start Center in Tampa, where she is “dearly loved and appreciated” by the staff and the children.  She nurtures and comforts the children, as well as helps them with their school work

            Karen Mosakowski was recognized for 10 years of service as a Bill Payer volunteer.

            Seniors in Service recruits, trains and places volunteers to help children succeed and elders remain independent.   In 2009 alone, its volunteers contributed more than a quarter of a million hours of service in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Polk counties. 

Being recognized for 17 years of service was Julia Ray, a Foster Grandparent at Bay Point Elementary School in St. Petersburg.   She serves in a kindergarten classroom, where she is described as “a beautiful asset to the class.” 

Three Foster Grandparents were recognized for 15 years of service.  They are Gwendolyn Fondren, Eartha Miller and Rosa Lee Morgan.

            Six volunteers were honored for 10 years of service as Foster Grandparents.  They are Ella Dowd, Alberta Dowdell, Fronnie Davis, Julia Ferri, Sue Hoskins and Julia Polk.

            Being recognized for 10 years as Senior Companions were Doris Davis, Minnie Pendleton and Venellia Randolph.
