Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay, Inc., hosted a festive breakfast on
Thursday, May 20, to celebrate six remarkable volunteers who have
provided more than 100 years of community service.
Mildred Brisker served as a Foster Grandparent at the
after-school program at
Lowry
Elementary School in Tampa, where students, parents and teachers all
called her "Grandma." She spent 27 years as a "vitally important
and very popular' member of the staff. In addition to doling out
smiles and hugs, she managed to snack counter, made sure children were
turned over to appropriate adults at the end of the day and assisted
students with homework.
Estella Vinson has served as a Foster Grandparent at LaVoy
Exceptional
Center
in Tampa for 23 years. She finds it rewarding to serve the school's
special population. She is a real asset to the staff, especially
in the agriculture area. She enjoys the variety in her activities,
including planting, plowing and caring for animals. She loves the
children and the encouragement she can give them. She is patient,
supportive, warm and affectionate.
For 20 years, Addie Lambert has served as a Foster Grandparent.
She serves
at
the Sulphur Springs Head Start Center in Tampa, where she is dearly
loved and appreciated by the staff and the children. She finds
that being a Foster Grandparents is "very satisfying" because she knows
she is having a positive impact on many young lives. She nurtures
and comforts the children, as well as helps them with their school work.
Being recognized for 17 years of service was Julia Ray, a Foster
Grandparent
at
Bay Point Elementary School in St. Petersburg. She serves in a
kindergarten classroom, where she is described as " a beautiful asset to
the class." The children miss her on the days when she is not in
school and love her when she is there. She always demonstrates a
positive attitude and has a positive influence on everyone in the room.
Rosa Lee Morgan has served for 17 years as a Foster Grandparent in
Polk
County.
She feels that her volunteer service is rewarding and meaningful.
This year she is matched with a classroom of older children in
Exceptional Student Education (ESE). Daily, she offers them love,
care and encouragement. Recently, Grandma celebrated her 77th
birthday. She was pleased that the children surprised her with a
birthday party, complete with cake, songs and a giant card they had
made.
Eartha Miller has served for 16 years as a Foster Grandparent at
Stephen
Foster
Elementary School in Tampa. She works with severely challenged
children, ranging in age from 7 to 9. She strives to help them
improve their communication skills and reads to them. She is
always patient and kind. Her teacher said, "I don't know what we
would do in the classroom with 'Grandma'."
The celebration featured a breakfast, networking with 250 energized
people and a dynamic program. Jack R. Lamb, Ed.D., was Honorary
Chairman of the event. Darren Farfante was Breakfast Chairman.
